Wokingham, Berkshire

Repointing
& brickwork,
done right.

Most brick walls don't need replacing. They need the joints raked out properly and refilled with the right mortar. That's what we do, for homes across Wokingham and the villages around it.

How we repoint

Cheap repointing fails because corners get cut here. This is how we do it, every time.

  1. Survey the wall

We check the bricks, the existing mortar and why it failed. Sometimes the cause is a gutter, not the pointing.

  2. Rake out properly

Joints are cleared to at least twice their height, usually 15–20 mm, without chipping brick edges.

  3. Match the mortar

Lime or cement depending on the house, with sand chosen to match the colour of what's already there.

  4. Point and finish

Joints are packed in layers, struck to the right profile and brushed back once firm. No smears on the brick face.

  5. Protect while it cures

Hessian or sheeting against sun, rain and frost so the mortar cures slowly and doesn't crack.

  6. Clear up

Scaffold down, site swept, and we walk the finished wall with you before we leave.

Questions

The things people usually ask on the first call.

How do I know if my house needs repointing?

Look for joints that are recessed more than about 5 mm, mortar that crumbles when you scratch it, gaps you can see light or plants through, or damp patches on the inside of an outside wall.

Lime or cement mortar?

Most houses built before about 1920 have solid walls and soft bricks that need lime so moisture can escape. Newer cavity-wall houses are usually fine with a cement mix. We'll tell you which on the survey.

Will I need scaffolding?

For anything above ground floor, usually yes, for safety and for a better finish. It's included in your quote so there are no surprises.

How long does it take?

A single elevation of an average house is typically a few days. A whole house can be one to three weeks depending on access and weather.

Can you work in winter?

Mortar shouldn't be laid below about 5°C or onto frosty brick, so we plan around the forecast. Spring to autumn is ideal, but there are plenty of good winter days.
